From the history of gilding to practical work

The session starts with an introduction to the origins of the technique, the production of metal leaf and the tools used. This provides a useful vocabulary for the objects on the worktable before you try them. Previous experience is not required: the course is suitable for newcomers who want an introduction to gilding, without signing up for professional training in restoration or specialist conservation methods.

Practical work follows the explanation, with Stefania guiding each stage while participants move at their own pace. Allow time to watch how a tool is held and how a light material behaves, and ask for a demonstration when something is unclear. These are useful questions to explore during the lesson. The point is to understand a process, rather than compete to produce a perfectly identical copy of a sample.

A prepared print and imitation gold leaf

The starting point is a print made especially for the course, reproducing the pencil lines of the artist’s original drawings. You decorate a supplied base rather than create a drawing from scratch. The stated material is imitation gold leaf: a golden finish should not be mistaken for the use of pure gold. This is a paper craft workshop, rather than a jewellery-making or goldsmithing class.

The listing’s photographs show pieces of metal leaf on a brown gilding cushion, flat blades and brushes alongside a print in progress. They give a useful sense of the materials and the attention to detail involved. Confirm the print available for your session with the studio: the gallery illustrates the activity, but does not establish that every visitor will receive the particular design shown in the photographs.

What is included in the session

Materials and the kit needed during the workshop are included, along with the prints to decorate. The listing specifies instruction in Italian and English. The session ends with an aperitif in the studio, consisting of a glass of Prosecco and some snacks. If you have dietary requirements or would prefer another drink, ask about possible arrangements before booking; a fixed menu is not published.

You take your creation home. A separate kit with the course’s tools is available to buy if you want to continue later; this optional purchase should be distinguished from the materials included for use in the workshop. Before leaving, consider asking how to protect the decorated sheet on your journey and how to handle its surface. That makes the practical lesson useful beyond the time spent at the table.

Planning your visit to Oro & Disegni

Meet at Campo Santa Maria Nova, Cannaregio 6043/b; the activity finishes at the same address. The organiser places the studio about five minutes on foot from Rialto Bridge. Use the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli as a landmark and keep the full street number with your booking. Allow between two and a half and three hours for the lesson, plus your own travel and waiting time.

The small group format requires a confirmed booking; do not assume that walk-in participation is available. Check your date, time and language on the voucher. Viator lists wheelchair access and accessible surfaces for the experience, but the route through Venice should be assessed separately, including bridges and boarding points. Explaining your requirements in advance allows you to request appropriate arrival advice rather than rely on a general accessibility label.

Venezia

How to get there

From the train station

Venezia Santa Lucia

From Venezia Santa Lucia station, go to the Ferrovia waterbus stops and take ACTV line 1 towards Rialto–San Marco–Lido, getting off at Rialto. From Rialto Bridge, walk towards Campo Santa Maria Nova to Oro & Disegni, Cannaregio 6043/b, near the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli. The organiser suggests about five minutes from the bridge; allow extra time to find the address. Check the current boarding point, timetable and service notices.

From the airport

Venezia Marco Polo (VCE)

At Marco Polo Airport, follow signs to the airport dock for Alilaguna. Its Orange Line connects the airport with Rialto. Continue from Rialto Bridge on foot to Campo Santa Maria Nova, Cannaregio 6043/b, near the Miracoli church. Check the timetable applicable on your travel date and allow for luggage and waiting. These are independently arranged transfers and are not included in the workshop.

Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.

Before you go

  • Confirm your place: sessions have a minimum of two and a maximum of four participants.
  • Ask which print will be used and how to carry your finished work.
  • Workshop materials are included; the optional take-home tool kit is a separate purchase.
