A private route through Ravenna’s artistic heritage

The experience listed on Viator by TUI Musement lasts approximately five hours and is reserved for your own booking group. A guide connects the monuments with the wider history of the city. A private format gives you room to ask questions without joining a large shared party, although entry arrangements and each site’s rules still apply. It can suit a first cultural visit or help travellers put familiar images from books into the context of the spaces where they belong.

Five admissions and a separate lunch break

The stated inclusions cover the guide and admission to the Basilica of San Vitale, Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Neonian Baptistery, Archiepiscopal Museum and Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo. The programme also describes the Basilica of San Francesco and a lunch break; lunch is not included. Ravenna’s UNESCO property consists of eight monuments, so this itinerary should not be understood as a visit to all eight. Check the selected option and voucher for the actual sequence, times and access arrangements before setting out.

Details worth noticing along the way

At San Vitale, the relationship between architecture, marble and mosaic decoration makes the whole interior worth considering alongside the famous imperial panels. At Galla Placidia, the contrast between a brick exterior and the starry ceiling inside changes the scale of the experience. The Neonian Baptistery brings an octagonal plan and decorated dome into the conversation. These differences give you useful questions for your guide: how do materials, light and images shape the meaning of each space? Looking beyond a single famous detail makes the route more rewarding.

Meeting point, language and planning your day

The listed meeting point is beneath the clock tower in Piazza del Popolo, and the tour ends in the same place. Follow the precise instructions in your voucher if arrangements are updated. English and other languages appear on the listing; choose the language actually available for your date and option. The language of this guide does not establish the tour language. Check current prices, departures and cancellation terms on Viator. Leave a comfortable gap before your return train because the approximate five-hour duration does not include walking back to the station.

Ravenna

How to get there

From the train station

Ravenna

Use Ravenna railway station and take the main exit onto Piazzale Farini, on the historic-centre side. The Darsena entrance is on the other side and is not the most direct reference for this walk. Continue on foot towards Piazza del Popolo using the official centre map, then locate the meeting point under the clock indicated in your voucher. Allow time to leave the platform, orient yourself and find the guide. Your rail journey and walk to the meeting point are arranged separately from the guided experience.

From the airport

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi (BLQ)

From Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, take Marconi Express to Bologna Centrale and continue by train to Ravenna. Check Trenitalia services for your date, including whether the chosen journey involves a change. Allow sufficient time between the airport connection and your train rather than relying on a tight transfer. At Ravenna, leave through Piazzale Farini and finish the journey on foot to Piazza del Popolo. Airport-connection and train tickets, baggage arrangements and transfers are outside the tour inclusions. If you choose an early start, arriving in Ravenna the previous day may make planning easier.

Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.

Before you go

  • Wear shoes suitable for several hours of walking and visiting interiors, with clothing appropriate for religious buildings.
  • The listing states that the tour is not wheelchair accessible. Discuss specific mobility requirements with the provider before booking.
  • Budget for lunch separately and agree with the guide on the break and where to regroup.
  • Follow the displayed rules on photography, flash and time inside each monument; do not assume they are identical throughout the route.
