Build an image one piece at a time
The appeal is the hands-on process. Watch how a small tessera changes the composition when placed beside another, and ask about the choices involved. For a first workshop, take time to follow the instructions rather than setting yourself a complicated design from the outset. Look at individual pieces and then step back mentally to consider the whole: the direction of a line and the relationship between colours provide useful questions for the lesson. Paying attention to these small decisions can make a finished mosaic more interesting to look at later, even without learning an extensive technical vocabulary.
Meet a living Ravenna craft tradition
Annafietta has worked on the approach to the Basilica of San Vitale since 1998. The studio describes the direct method, with tesserae set into mortar, as part of its craft practice. That background connects the activity with the city around it. Confirm the precise programme for your booking, however: works displayed in the shop do not establish the size, subject or materials of your own piece. If you particularly want to explore a certain technique, ask whether it can be covered in the available session. A short introduction gives you a starting point, rather than the scope of an extended professional course.
Fit the class into your city visit
Combine the workshop with a walk around the centre, leaving a comfortable interval for lunch or separately booked sightseeing. The meeting point is inside the shop at number 21, not at the entrance to San Vitale. The nearby basilica is a useful landmark, but admission to monuments should not be assumed to form part of this booking. If children are joining, or someone would like to accompany you without taking part, check the participation arrangements in advance. Keep your return journey flexible enough to allow time after the stated finish rather than rushing straight to a departing train.
Prepare for your booked session
Check the selected language and starting time. The listing gives a maximum of twenty participants and marks the activity as not wheelchair accessible. Ask specifically about the entrance and work area if you have access requirements. Comfortable clothes are a sensible choice for working at a table; follow the tutor’s guidance when using tools. It is also worth discussing what happens to your completed piece: drying, collection and protection during transport may affect your plans. Leaving room in your luggage can help, but confirm the dimensions and handover arrangements rather than assuming it will be ready to pack immediately.
Ravenna
How to get there
From the train station
Ravenna railway station — Piazzale Farini exit
Leave the station on the historic-centre side at Piazzale Farini, rather than the Darsena side. Set your walking route to Annafietta Mosaicisti, Via Giuliano Argentario 21, in the San Vitale area. Check the house number against the voucher map and go into the shop. Allow for your walking pace, luggage and any diversions in the centre. If you prefer a taxi, give the complete address and agree a permitted drop-off point: traffic restrictions apply in parts of the historic centre. Reaching Ravenna station is only the first part of reaching the workshop.
From the airport
Bologna Guglielmo Marconi (BLQ)
Take Marconi Express from the airport to Bologna Centrale, then select a train to Ravenna for your travel date, checking whether a change is required. On arrival, use the Piazzale Farini exit and continue to Via Giuliano Argentario 21. Arrange and pay for this journey separately. Allow time for disembarking, collecting bags and moving between services; avoid booking the class immediately after your scheduled landing. Check operator notices and your return connections. The short airport monorail journey is only one stage of the trip to the studio.
Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.
