Observing Matera from an external position helps to grasp relationships that remain hidden in the alleys. The layout of the buildings, the void of the ravine and the profile of the plateau become parts of the same whole. The route in the park is not simply a transfer to a photo point. The path allows you to notice the terrain, the vegetation and the adaptation of the spaces to the rock. Walk on natural terrain

The presence of a vehicle simplifies the approach, but during the visit you will have to walk on natural surfaces. Shoes with good grip are more suitable than smooth soles or unstable sandals. The sun can be intense and the shade is not continuous: bring water and a hat, without weighing down your backpack with objects that you will not use during the route.

The route is chosen depending on the program and conditions. Do not automatically consider the suspension bridge over the ravine or every rock church you have seen in the photograph to be included: they are places and accesses with specific characteristics. If a milestone is essential for you, ask if it is actually scheduled. For children or mobility needs, first check the length, difference in height and surface of the path.

From the meeting in the center to the return near the station

The meeting point is at Altieri Viaggi, in Via Domenico Ridola 61. The indicated conclusion is in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, in the Matera station area. Departure and arrival are therefore different: good news if you continue by train or bus, as long as you have what you need with you and don't have to return immediately to the starting point.

To organize your day you can dedicate part to the park and part to the Sassi, leaving an interval to rest. Avoid planning two demanding routes in the hottest hours without a break. If you have a return ticket, consider the time needed after the end of the tour to reach the exact departure point of the vehicle and find your way around the local network.
