From historic cafés to a coffee roastery

The published route includes Caffè Tommaseo, Caffè degli Specchi and Torrefazione La Triestina, passing through Cavana. The connecting theme is the relationship between coffee, the places serving it and their customers. You can enjoy that perspective without knowing about blends or brewing methods beforehand. Bring an interest in how one tasting differs from another, and try describing what you notice in ordinary language. Asking your guide to explain a difference can be more rewarding than searching for the correct technical expression. The walk gives those conversations a setting beyond the contents of a cup.

Learning to order a nero or capo in b

In Trieste, an espresso can be ordered as a nero, while a capo in b is a macchiato served in a small glass. This local vocabulary provides an approachable introduction to café culture, shaped by the city’s port and Central European history. During a stop, ask how to use the names and distinguish the drink’s preparation from its container. These are useful questions to take to a café counter after the tour as well. Rather than memorising a long list of expressions, start with the coffee you usually enjoy and find out how you would ask for it here.

Preparing for the tastings

With three tastings spread across a walk, it makes sense to give the experience room in your day instead of scheduling another booking immediately afterwards. Tell the operator about allergies and intolerances before choosing the tour, and ask about alternatives to the pastry or drinks containing milk. If you prefer decaffeinated coffee, check whether it can be accommodated; substitutions should not be assumed. Bring water and comfortable shoes, and dress for the weather, as the experience involves walking between stops. Treat it as an opportunity for conversation and discovery, without expecting a professional extraction course or a practical barista lesson.

Language, meeting arrangements and your visit

The activity is listed in English, with a maximum of twelve travellers. It is not wheelchair accessible and is described as unsuitable for people with walking difficulties. Check your voucher for the guide’s exact position in the square, your start time and the conditions applying to your date. If visiting during Barcolana 2026, held from 2 to 11 October, read the transport notices and allow additional time to get around. The coffee tour is separate from the event programme. It can be part of your own city itinerary, arranged through an independent reservation rather than treated as a Barcolana activity.

Trieste

How to get there

From the train station

Trieste Centrale

Leave the station towards Piazza della Libertà and follow Corso Cavour towards the waterfront. Continue along Riva III Novembre in the direction of Molo Audace to reach Piazza Unità d’Italia, which opens onto the sea. This route is identifiable on the official city map; also consult current walking directions for crossings and any diversions. Once in the square, use the precise meeting instructions on your voucher. Do not wait inside a café or beside a fountain unless the operator has specified it. With luggage, consider a taxi and agree on a permitted drop-off near the meeting area.

From the airport

Trieste Airport (TRS)

From the terminal, follow signs for Trieste Airport railway station via the covered pedestrian connection; the airport website gives an approximate eight-minute walk. On Trenitalia, find a service to Trieste Centrale for your arrival date and time, checking its stops and any service notices. From Centrale, walk via Corso Cavour and the waterfront to Piazza Unità, then locate the meeting point described on your voucher. Allow time for disembarkation, luggage and waiting for the train: the rail journey alone is not the full transfer time. Travel from the airport is arranged separately from the tour.

Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.

Before you go

  • Save your voucher and the operator’s contact details before heading to Piazza Unità d’Italia.
  • Confirm the English-language departure, start time and conditions concerning minimum participant numbers.
  • Discuss allergies and preferences before booking, and agree on any substitutions rather than assuming they are included.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and leave time to get back to the station after the walk.
