Seeing a picture take shape in wood

In wood inlay, thin pieces are brought together so that their colours and grain help create an image. Sorrento’s tradition flourished especially during the nineteenth century, alongside the Grand Tour. That background provides a useful starting point for looking at a box or panel: consider how a maker chooses contrasts, places a border and gives the whole design balance. During the visit, questions about those decisions can be more revealing than simply asking how long an object takes. Look closely at the meeting point between one piece and the next.

From watching the process to trying it

The maker describes a visit following the stages from veneer to finished work, with the opportunity to create a small inlaid piece. Watching a sequence before attempting a movement yourself is a useful way to appreciate the technique. Follow the artisans’ instructions on tools and the tasks offered during your session. If there is a particular part of the process you would like to try, ask in advance whether it is included. Treat the practical element as an introduction, with room for questions and concentration, rather than setting yourself a complicated project to finish during the visit.

Two addresses to keep separate

The pickup reference is the Mastellone shop at Via Torquato Tasso 19 in Sorrento. The production workshop is in Sant’Agnello, at Via Vincenzo C. A. Ferraro 18. Save both addresses and check which one appears on your confirmed instructions; only go directly to the workshop when that has been agreed. A transfer from the shop is described, but its availability and capacity should be confirmed for your party when booking. Keep the final appointment details and clarify the return arrangements too. Buying additional items in the shop is a separate decision, not a requirement for enjoying the visit.

Planning a comfortable visit

Choose a session that gives you breathing space around your journey. A walk through Sorrento’s old town can fit before or afterwards, arranged independently of the workshop. The maker describes the tour in English, so check the language attached to your chosen option. Viator lists the activity as not wheelchair accessible and not recommended during pregnancy; take these participation conditions into account before purchasing. For children, ask which practical tasks suit their ages. Check the date-specific price, availability and booking conditions, and make sure everyone in your party has the same confirmed meeting information.

Sorrento e Sant’Agnello

How to get there

From the train station

Sorrento — EAV/Circumvesuviana

Use Sorrento EAV/Circumvesuviana station as your rail reference. From Napoli Centrale, continue on the EAV service from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi towards Sorrento after checking the current timetable. At Sorrento, go down from Piazza De Curtis to Corso Italia and turn left towards Piazza Tasso. Continue into the old town along Via San Cesareo, then make your way to Via Torquato Tasso 19. This reaches the meeting shop, not the workshop in Sant’Agnello; coordinate that onward transfer with the operator. The described pedestrian route includes steps, which matter when planning luggage or mobility needs.

From the airport

Napoli Capodichino (NAP)

Curreri operates a direct connection from Naples Capodichino airport to Sorrento–Stazione. Choose a departure that allows for landing, baggage collection and the workshop appointment. From the station, follow the route through Corso Italia and Piazza Tasso to Via Torquato Tasso 19. The airport journey is organised separately from the experience and the shop-to-workshop transfer. Check Curreri’s return guidance as well as the outbound service, allowing for road traffic. Avoid arranging the workshop so close to an airport departure that a delay would leave you with no practical margin.

Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.

Before you go

  • Keep the Via Torquato Tasso 19 meeting point and only go straight to Sant’Agnello by agreement.
  • Confirm the session language, suitable tasks for children and transfer space for the whole party.
  • Plan train or airport-bus tickets and your return journey separately from the workshop.
