Explore shaping, the wheel and colour

The ceramic artist’s three-hour programme brings together modelling, a try at the pottery wheel and an introduction to glazing and decoration. These are different ways of engaging with the same material. During the class, notice how a shape responds to the pressure of your fingers and ask which movements are worth practising slowly. Start with a simple idea and follow the guidance when choosing your work. You do not need an elaborate design: a curve, an edge or a colour combination can provide plenty to explore. Confirm the activities included in the particular session you book.

A creative break at Pulcinella Sciòroom

The workshop is associated with Elvira Peduto, an architect and ceramic artist who teaches maiolica techniques. Her practice connects design with making, providing an interesting setting for anyone curious about how an idea becomes an object. A small workshop also creates opportunities to ask focused questions about the process. Couples and friends can follow different interests and compare what they notice, without turning the session into a competition over the best result. Let curiosity guide your approach, especially if this is your first time working with clay. The useful souvenir may also be a new way of looking at handmade objects.

What happens to your work afterwards

Finishing the class does not mean your piece is ready to go straight into your suitcase. Further processing is needed; the organiser explains that finished, fired pieces can be shipped at the participant’s expense. Before booking, ask which objects will be retained and how delivery times, arrangements and costs work for your destination. During the session, check how your work will be identified and ask permission if you would like to photograph it. That gives you a record of the making while you wait for the result. Avoid planning your departure around taking a newly made piece away immediately.

Choose your session and leave time around it

The listing gives a maximum of six participants and marks the activity as not wheelchair accessible. The studio’s website describes five steps, so discuss access requirements before booking. Check the language, age requirements and start time of your chosen session, particularly when travelling with children. Tools are included, but comfortable clothing remains a sensible choice. Keep unnecessary belongings off the work table and have your voucher ready before setting out. Allow a buffer before your next commitment. Lunch or a stroll along the main street can round out the day; arrange these independently of the workshop.

Vietri sul Mare

How to get there

From the train station

Vietri sul Mare-Amalfi

From Salerno, look for a train calling at Vietri sul Mare-Amalfi on your travel date. Once there, follow walking directions to Pulcinella Sciòroom, Corso Umberto I 102, and check the exact street number. This is the station in Vietri: the word Amalfi in its name does not mean you have arrived in Amalfi town. Check the route against the map on your voucher, allowing for luggage and your own walking pace. If using a taxi, give the full address and agree a suitable drop-off point. Check return services and railway notices in advance.

From the airport

Salerno Costa d’Amalfi e del Cilento (QSR)

Take Salerno Airlink from the airport to Salerno railway station; the city stop is in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Continue by train to Vietri sul Mare-Amalfi and then walk to Corso Umberto I 102. Check schedules for your actual travel date and allow time for luggage collection and the bus-to-train connection. Transport is arranged separately from the class. If the connections do not fit your flight, consider a road transfer booked in advance. Avoid scheduling the workshop immediately after landing, and check your options for getting back to the airport as well.

Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.

Before you go

  • Confirm the language, starting time and arrangements for children before choosing a session.
  • Ask how firing, collection and shipping of your pieces will be handled.
  • Wear comfortable clothes, keep your voucher handy and reach number 102 with time to spare.
