Looking closely at the cathedral’s frescoes

The cathedral visit draws attention to the Chapel of San Brizio and Luca Signorelli’s frescoes. A guide can help connect the figures and scenes of the Last Judgment with the wider composition, giving you reasons to look beyond the first impression. Make time to observe as well as to take any permitted photographs. The chapel has its own access rules: the Opera del Duomo limits guided visits inside it to fifteen minutes, and visits are not allowed during liturgical celebrations. The full tour therefore covers several places and movements between them; actual access and timings follow the monument’s arrangements.

Pozzo della Cava and the spaces below town

The underground stop is Pozzo della Cava, at Via della Cava 28. Its archaeological spaces preserve evidence from Etruscan, medieval and Renaissance periods, showing different ways the rock was used. A well, water-related structures and remains of pottery production help tell the story of a town shaped through excavation as well as construction. Look for connections between a space’s shape and its former purpose: an opening or a working trace can prompt a useful question for your guide. This is a cultural visit. The separate Orvieto Underground circuit and St Patrick’s Well are not the underground stops on this itinerary.

What the experience includes

The booking includes a guide and admission to the cathedral and Pozzo della Cava. It is listed as a small-group experience for up to fifteen participants, with at least two people required per booking. Check the selected option’s language and departure time before purchasing, particularly if you are fitting the tour between train journeys. Afterwards, an independent walk gives you time to enjoy the square and the surrounding streets at your own pace. Plan other monument visits separately: this itinerary provides access to the named sites rather than an all-inclusive sightseeing pass for the whole town.

Getting ready for the visit

The tour is listed as requiring a moderate level of physical fitness and as not wheelchair accessible. If stairs, changes in level or enclosed underground spaces present a difficulty, discuss your requirements with the organiser before booking. Comfortable walking shoes and light luggage make sense for both the sites and the walk between them. Inside the cathedral, follow staff instructions and behave appropriately for a place of worship. Arrive at the information point with some time to spare. Reaching Piazza Duomo is only the first step; you still need to identify the correct meeting place and your group.

Orvieto

How to get there

From the train station

Orvieto (Orvieto Scalo)

Orvieto railway station stands below the historic centre, in Piazza Matteotti. For the uphill connection, consider Busitalia’s replacement shuttle to Piazza Cahen: its notice dated 17 June 2026 suspends the funicular until maintenance is completed. Check for updates before travelling. From Piazza Cahen, walk along Corso Cavour and Via del Duomo to Piazza Duomo, or check the Circolare A bus service for the Piazza Duomo stop. Finish at the information point named in your voucher. Allow time for the uphill journey and final section; a train arriving when the tour begins will not leave enough time to reach the meeting point.

From the airport

Roma Fiumicino (FCO)

From Fiumicino Airport, take the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini, then choose a train that calls at Orvieto. Use Trenitalia to check a connection for your actual travel date and tour time, allowing for baggage collection, the change at Termini and possible waits. At Orvieto Scalo, follow the station directions through Piazza Cahen to the meeting point in Piazza Duomo. You arrange this journey independently; the tour starts in Orvieto. If you are flying in on the same day, leave a generous margin or choose a later visit instead of relying on a tight connection.

Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.

Before you go

  • Check the meeting instructions, language and selected option’s conditions before booking.
  • Recheck the funicular and replacement shuttle arrangements for your travel date.
  • Discuss mobility needs in advance and allow for the cathedral’s access rules.
