Turn an idea into a wax model

You shape a wax prototype with guidance from the artist, using the materials and tools provided for the experience. Before starting, choose a straightforward idea and explain how you would like to wear it. A compact shape, a rounded outline or an uneven surface offers a different starting point; ask which approach suits the time available. Bring a small sketch of your own if useful, while remaining open to suggestions. Focusing on one well-considered detail makes it easier to follow corrections and understand the decisions behind them. Your first attempt does not need to become a complicated design project.

Meet the practice behind Karibu Jewels

The experience offered through Club Joy is associated with Giulia of Karibu Jewels, whose craft uses the lost-wax technique. It encourages you to look at jewellery through the choices involved in making it. Ask how to judge proportions, edges and comfort, or how to describe an idea before a finished object exists. When visiting with someone else, feel free to develop different projects: comparing two approaches may prove more interesting than trying to achieve matching results. If you would like a record of the process, ask permission to photograph your model and the work surface. Keep the focus on your own creation.

What happens before the finished piece is ready

The session produces a model; the artist handles the later casting and finishing. You should therefore not plan to leave the class with the completed metal jewellery. Before booking, ask which metal and finishing work your selected option includes, whether any supplements apply, and how collection or shipping is arranged. Discuss any metal sensitivities before deciding on the piece. If it will be a gift, allow plenty of time before the intended occasion. Settling these details early helps you choose with clear expectations and enjoy the work itself. Keep a note of the agreed delivery arrangements before leaving the studio.

Make space for a creative break

Choose a session that does not leave you rushing straight to a train or another timed visit. Comfortable clothing is useful; secure accessories that could get in the way of your hands, and bring your usual close-work glasses if needed. Confirm the session language, availability and participation requirements before booking. Ask specifically about children or mobility needs rather than relying on a general description. Save the voucher and the organiser’s contact details before setting out. Afterwards, continue exploring independently, giving this hands-on part of the day room to stand on its own without adding another appointment to every spare hour.

Milano

How to get there

From the train station

Milano Centrale / Dergano M3

At Milano Centrale, follow signs to Centrale FS M3 and take the yellow line towards Comasina to Dergano. Continue on foot to Via Filippo Baldinucci 60, checking a current walking route and the address on your voucher. Your destination is the workshop entrance, not simply the metro station. Consult GiroMilano for service notices and journey planning, allowing time for the final walk when choosing your departure. If you prefer a taxi from Centrale, provide the full address and leave a buffer for traffic. Check any access requirements separately with the organiser.

From the airport

Milan Malpensa (MXP) and Milan Linate (LIN)

From Malpensa T1 or T2, choose a Malpensa Express service stopping at Milano Bovisa Politecnico. Continue to Via Filippo Baldinucci 60 on foot using current directions, or arrange a taxi; there is no need to travel all the way into central Milan first. From Linate, take M4 to Sforza-Policlinico, follow the signed walking interchange to Missori M3, then travel towards Comasina to Dergano and walk to number 60. Check schedules and notices for your travel date. Allow time for luggage, connections and the last leg. These journeys are arranged separately from the workshop.

Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.

Before you go

  • Start with a simple idea and discuss which details can be achieved during the session.
  • Confirm the metal, possible extra charges, timescale and delivery arrangements before booking.
  • Save the voucher and full address, and leave generous margins around flights and trains.
