Understanding Cortona on foot
The town’s Etruscan heritage and medieval streets give a walk here several layers to explore. Look at how narrow lanes, old walls and open spaces fit the hillside rather than the regular grid of a flat city. A guide can help you read those relationships and put individual buildings in context. Ask how different periods have shaped the streets you are passing through. This turns the route into a way of understanding the town, with time to notice changes in stonework, scale and perspective between the larger stops.
The cathedral, Piazza Signorelli and San Francesco
The published experience includes Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, Piazza Signorelli, Palazzo Casali and the Church of San Francesco. These stops bring religious architecture together with the spaces of everyday civic life. The itinerary lists admission to the cathedral and San Francesco as included. Check the day’s arrangements with the operator if interior visits are especially important to you, since religious services can affect access. Treat the sequence as an outline of the walk rather than a precise timetable; follow the programme confirmed for your own departure.
Palazzo Casali and an optional museum visit
Palazzo Casali stands on Piazza Signorelli and is associated with the MAEC, the Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the City of Cortona. A stop at the palace does not establish that museum admission is included. If archaeology is your main interest, plan a separate visit after the walk and check opening arrangements and tickets. The Diocesan Museum is another independent option. Choosing one subject to explore further helps you allow enough time, without assuming that every museum in the old town belongs to the guided experience.
Meeting the guide and planning the private visit
The meeting point is beside the obelisk in Piazza Garibaldi, 52044 Cortona, and the activity returns to the same place. Keep your voucher handy and check the selected language and actual starting time. A private group does not mean a route without slopes or steps: the listing states that this activity is not wheelchair accessible. Discuss specific mobility requirements before booking. Private transport is excluded, so arrange your own journey to the square and review the inclusions of the option you choose. Leave a comfortable margin to find the guide and settle in before the walk begins.
Leaving space for the rest of the day
A free interval afterwards lets you revisit a square that caught your attention or sit down for lunch without watching the clock. Keep any museum visit separate from the guided itinerary and remember the journey back down to the railway station. A train departing immediately after the tour leaves little room for the connecting bus. Shoes with a reliable grip and light luggage make the cobbled streets easier to enjoy. On a changeable day, a light waterproof layer is more useful than planning every minute around a perfect forecast.
Cortona
How to get there
From the train station
Camucia-Cortona
From Camucia-Cortona station, take the Cortona Link bus from the forecourt and choose Cortona Centro Piazza Garibaldi as your destination. After getting off, walk to the obelisk in the same square to meet the guide. Trenitalia lets you search for a combined train and bus journey to this destination. Check connections for your travel date with Trenitalia and TIEMME. Cortona Link also serves Terontola-Cortona station; neither railway station should be confused with the hilltop historic centre.
From the airport
Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR)
From Florence airport, take tram T2 to the Firenze Santa Maria Novella station area. Search for a train to Camucia-Cortona, checking whether your departure requires a change, then use Cortona Link to Piazza Garibaldi and meet beside the obelisk. These tram, train and bus journeys are arrangements for reaching the walk. Check the complete connection before choosing your tour time, allowing for baggage collection, waiting time and possible flight delays.
Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.
