The old town sets the scene

Escursì’s programme connects the historic centre with the material culture of the town. Paved lanes and the Doria Castle provide the setting, and the operator also lists stops for photographs at viewpoints. Allow yourself to enjoy the walk as part of the experience. Seeing Castelsardo only as a quick seaside stop would miss the context that makes the practical activity more meaningful.

The Viator listing includes the guided old-town tour, admission to the Museo dell’Intreccio Mediterraneo and the workshop. The combination suits visitors who enjoy moving from looking to making: first you notice shapes and materials, then you try a process yourself. The advertised two hours cover the whole experience, rather than two full hours at the workbench.

A different way to look at a basket

Housed in the Doria fortress, the museum preserves knowledge passed between generations. Its own history pages describe dwarf palm, seagrass and raffia as part of Castelsardo’s weaving tradition. That background helps explain the relationship between material, shape and function. It does not mean that every fibre shown in the museum will necessarily be used during your booked workshop.

Look closely at the base, the evenness of the successive rounds and the way the rim finishes the object. A simple container reveals many small decisions. Colour and pattern may catch your attention first, but following the construction helps you appreciate how the form holds together. It is an engaging way to slow down and give an everyday object the attention usually reserved for a more spectacular exhibit.

Taking the technique into your own hands

The practical session introduces basketmaking, with materials and tools listed in the operator’s programme. You can take home the item you make, giving your visit a tangible souvenir. There is no need to expect a piece identical to the works on display: trying the technique is an opportunity to recognise the concentration and repeated gestures behind the finished objects.

It can help to focus on one stage at a time and ask how to keep your weave regular. This is a good fit for travellers seeking an active cultural pause within a northern Sardinia itinerary. Comfortable footwear, drinking water and a bag for your small finished piece are useful preparations. Leave a little space in the rest of the day so that reaching the meeting point does not become a rush.

During the visit, try connecting the shape of an object with its possible use. Returning to that question when you handle the fibres is a simple way to connect the workshop with the story of the place, as well as enjoying a creative activity.

Castelsardo

How to get there

From the train station

Sassari

From Sassari railway station, walk to the ARST terminal on Via Padre Zirano: the checked route is about 500 metres, roughly 7 minutes, via Via XXV Aprile. ARST route 721 connects the terminal with Castelsardo Piazza Nuova; choose a service that calls there on your travel date. From Piazza Nuova, the walking route to Spalti Manganella runs via Via Piave, approximately 650 metres or 10 minutes. Adapt the final approach to the pin in your booking confirmation.

From the airport

Alghero-Fertilia (AHO)

Take ARST route 760 from the airport to Sassari Via Padre Zirano, then route 721 to Castelsardo Piazza Nuova. Continue on foot towards Spalti Manganella. Airport bus stops are outside the terminal, around 150 metres from the arrivals exit. Check both services and your return journey for the chosen date: allow a transfer margin in Sassari rather than treating the buses as a guaranteed connection.

Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.
