Working with silk, colour and a printed mark

The activity centres on woodblock printing on silk, bringing together a printing matrix, colour and a material associated with the Como area. The studio describes printing and painting with natural pigments and traditional tools. The interest lies in seeing how a design reaches the fabric: the distribution of colour, the contact between surfaces and the resulting impression all become things to examine closely.

This makes a thoughtful addition to a Bellagio stay for travellers interested in making something. Guided work provides an opportunity to ask about the materials and individual steps without treating a short holiday activity as professional training. If you have a particular project in mind, discuss it beforehand. The public description does not promise a specific design, a complete garment or the carving of a new block by every participant.

A private session with a piece to take away

Viator lists an approximate duration of ninety minutes and a lesson reserved for your own group, with an Italian master and an assistant. The inclusions cover traditional art materials and tools, packaging for the work you create and a day ticket to the gardens. The studio’s own description adds context about natural pigments and local silk, rather than a fixed sequence that every visitor must reproduce.

Confirm the session length and starting time before arranging a tightly timed onward visit: the studio also mentions two hours overall. Allow separately for the time you wish to spend outdoors. After working, it is useful to ask how your particular piece should be transported and cared for. Follow the advice for the materials actually used, rather than assuming every printed textile can immediately be folded or washed in the same way.

Adding Villa Melzi Gardens to the day

The gardens provide an outdoor companion to time spent at the workbench. Plan their visit around the appointment and the last admission time. Admission to the gardens should not be confused with access to the villa’s private interiors. Keeping that distinction in mind helps when comparing Lake Como visits and deciding what else to include in the day.

The opening calendar is seasonal. The official information checked in October shows reduced hours later in the month and a closure date of 1 November. For later dates, ask the studio how the garden element is handled. A bookable workshop date alone is not proof that the park is accessible at any time of year. Check the current garden calendar again before travelling.

Finding the studio in Loppia

The meeting point is Bellagio Ars Vivendi, Via Melzi d’Eril 23A, by the small port of Loppia. This is separate from Bellagio’s main ferry landing. Viator also describes an approach through the gardens, collecting the included ticket at the gate. Follow the arrangement confirmed on your voucher so you know whether to go directly to the studio or enter through the park first.

Plan the appointment, outward sailing and return connection together. The public-road approach to Loppia includes an uphill and a downhill section; comfortable footwear and light luggage make the walk more manageable. Anyone with mobility requirements should agree the most suitable entrance in advance, checking the journey to the door as well as access inside the studio.

Bellagio

How to get there

From the train station

Varenna Esino

Trenord operates direct trains from Milano Centrale to Varenna Esino in approximately an hour. The verified walk from the station to the ferry landing is about 400 metres via Via dei Platani, Via per Esino, Via Venini and Via Imbarcadero, including steps. Take a sailing to Bellagio listed by Navigazione Laghi. From the Bellagio pier, follow Lungolago Europa towards Villa Melzi; the public-road route continues uphill along Via Paolo Carcano, then right downhill into Via Melzi d’Eril to number 23A in Loppia. Arrange any alternative entrance through the gardens with the studio.

From the airport

Milano Malpensa (MXP)

From Malpensa Terminal 1 or 2, take a Malpensa Express service for Milano Centrale. Change to Trenord for Varenna Esino, walk to the ferry, sail to Bellagio and continue to the studio as described above. Check each connection separately and leave room for luggage and waiting time. These are independently arranged journeys, not a transfer supplied by the workshop.

Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.

Before you go

  • Confirm the booked language, starting time and duration before choosing inflexible onward connections.
  • Check the garden opening calendar and the instructions for collecting the included admission ticket.
  • Discuss children’s participation, access requirements and how to carry the finished work with the provider.
  • Check current availability, amounts and booking conditions on Viator, and identify a suitable return sailing.
