Starting at the cathedral in the upper town
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donatus stands on the hill of San Pietro. Its position helps explain the shape of Arezzo: the centre climbs from the railway station towards the religious complex and civic buildings. Before setting off, look at the steps and the relationship between the church and its surrounding space. You meet at the foot of the staircase in front of the cathedral; the booking address is Piazza del Duomo 3. Reaching the square a little early gives you time to identify the meeting point without confusing it with a museum entrance.
Taking a closer look at Piazza Grande
Piazza Grande is trapezoidal and distinctly sloping, so walking across it constantly changes your perspective. The Logge designed by Giorgio Vasari occupy the upper side, while the apse of the Pieve introduces another architectural language. Comparing these forms is a useful way to follow the guide’s explanation, rather than only photographing the overall view. Notice how the arches frame movement and how the surrounding façades address the shared space. Ask which changes have shaped the square you see today, and allow yourself a moment to look again after hearing the answer.
The Pieve, Petrarch and a connection with cinema
The tour description brings together Santa Maria della Pieve, the city’s connection with Francesco Petrarca and settings associated with Life Is Beautiful. These offer different ways into Arezzo through architecture, literature and film. Tell your guide which subject interests you, without assuming that this is a separate film-location tour or that it automatically includes entry to historic houses. The appeal of the walk lies in connecting visible places with their stories. Individual stops and their order should follow the itinerary confirmed by the operator, rather than a self-imposed schedule of every monument in town.
Planning your time with the guide
The experience includes a private guide; tickets for places charging admission remain separate. If you want to visit a museum or explore an interior, ask beforehand whether it fits the walk or needs additional time afterwards. Meals, drinks and your journey to the meeting point also require separate arrangements. Shoes suited to stone paving and a waterproof layer are sensible choices for an outdoor walk. Discuss any mobility requirements before booking: slopes, steps and the journey uphill from the station deserve an individual assessment, even when a listing describes the activity as accessible.
Keeping some time for independent discovery
After the guided walk, you can return to the place that caught your attention, pause beneath the Logge or look at the square from another angle. Leaving a buffer before your return train makes that choice easier. If you would prefer an indoor visit, check the individual attraction’s opening hours and arrange any separate ticket. Building the day around a few considered stops gives you more time to notice details. It also helps keep the time reserved for your guide distinct from the part of the day you explore independently.
Arezzo
How to get there
From the train station
Arezzo
Leave the railway station into Piazza della Repubblica and follow Via Guido Monaco towards the centre. Reach Piazza San Francesco, then climb Via Cesalpino towards Piazza della Libertà and Piazza del Duomo, using the official tourist map and signs. This is an uphill walk, so allow a margin suited to your pace. Your destination is the foot of the staircase in front of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donatus, Piazza del Duomo 3. There is also a taxi rank outside the station: ask the driver for the nearest permitted drop-off point convenient for this meeting place.
From the airport
Florence Amerigo Vespucci – Peretola (FLR)
From the terminal, reach Peretola Aeroporto tram stop and take T2 towards San Marco – Università. Get off at Alamanni – Stazione SMN, enter Firenze Santa Maria Novella station and choose a train that stops at Arezzo. Continue uphill to Piazza del Duomo 3 using the walking route, or take a taxi. Check GEST, Autolinee Toscane and Trenitalia for current services and travel notices. Allow enough time between your flight, tram, train and walk. These transfers are separate from the tour.
Always check the meeting point on your voucher: it may vary by the option booked. Check timetables and connections again before travelling.
